Christus Gardens has been honored with The Shining Example Award for its year-long program of special events, exhibits, and features developed in celebration of it's 40th anniversary during 2000 and 2001, by the
Southeast Tourism Society, the organization of visitor attractions and travel-related promotional organizations.
Christus Gardens was selected for the award from among 500 participating attractions throughout
15 southeastern states by a blue-ribbon panel of judges.
Exhibits, special events, and features included lighting of a three-story high cross and star display; the painting of a 900-square foot, life-size
mural of Biblical history; display of the finest private collection of Biblical coins in the United States; unveiling of three new life-size paintings of the parables of Jesus; Winter lighting which won the
Winterfest lighting competition in the Gatlinburg area; and an Easter display created around the Legend of the Dogwood.
Since its founding in 1960, Christus Gardens has been toured by millions of people from
all 50 states and more than six dozen foreign countries.
